David Gallup convinced me that I would not kill myself if I went out kayaking.  I was worried because I’ve never done it before.  Well I set off and headed for some of the other people who were out and it was great.   I went to sit above a kelp bed and then I heard barking noises and looked over to see a colony of elephant seals.   I had such fun just sitting and watching them … some played in the surf while others just lay on top of one another.    I took a few photos (one of myself) and rowed over to a pretty area with a few caves and a little beach where the seals were surfing.  Later I rowed all of the way over past the boat and across to the other side of the bay to look at the rock that I had painted yesterday.   Lo and behold it was topped by a flock of pelicans!   The winds began to come up so I rowed (or paddled) back to the boat.

Most of the group were hiking up the long sandy hill to the top of the island and walking over to a little forest of crystallized trees.  It was a really strenuous hike and I knew we were going to hike on Santa Rosa Island the next day, so I decided not to go.  I gathered my gear and rode the inflatable to the shore.   I spent a glorious day painting.    I rather liked this first painting of the day and I loved staying in the cove shaded by rocks and caressed by the breeze.   I decided, though, that I need to really have some instruction on painting rocks.
