Moonrise –
We all watched a wonderful moonrise over Prince Island looking toward the California mainland. David painted two fabulous nocturnes. His first one of the moon as it was just rising over the top of the island was my favorite. I painted one which was so so. BUT that painting was the third painting of the day! I have never painted three paintings in one day before. I was exhausted and as soon I finished my painting I crawled into my bunk and fell soundly asleep.

I never got the promised edge lesson, but David did demonstrate how he layers thick paint to create interesting juxtapositions of color. He emphasized the importance of unique compositions and subjects.
Here at home I decided to try to do a moonscape which was more like David Gallup's... It's really not like his which you should probably see on his website -- but I like to think that it's in the spirit of David's work . Day 2 (of 5)
Sunrise –
I woke up early then took a shower and went out to see the sun come up. This was the perfect way to start the day.
Can you see the moon over that glassy water in the photo on the left?

The eight Channel Islands span 160 miles off the coast of Southern California. There are four northern islands -- San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, and Anacapa. These are the islands that we visited on our trip. The four southern islands are San Nicolas, Santa Barbara, Santa Catalina, and San Clemente.
