"INSPIRATION IS EVERYWHERE"
5x7 INCH ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING
BY TOM BROWN
An out of town trip to visit my son presented me with some fresh subject matter for paintings.
While my son wrapped up a few details at the office I took the opportunity to explore his town. Of course I had a camera and the trusty little pochade paintbox shown in my YouTube video.
Outside a coffee shop I discovered the scene in the photo, and with a little artistic license I turned it into today’s painting.
I liked the strong vertical shapes of the distant urban scene, as well as the dramatic “framing” of the dark foreground area. There was a steady stream of pedestrians along the sidewalk, and I included a cluster of them for added interest.
But I felt the distant buildings were busier than I liked, so I made a few changes to simplify them into stronger, simpler shapes. And I moved some of the sidewalk trees into the center of the painting.
Sometimes I paint things as I would LIKE to see them rather than recording the literal facts. I take what nature offers as a “suggestion” rather than something I must follow slavishly.
I thought it would be interesting to show the scene as it actually appeared, as well as how I used that to form the basis of this painting.
I hope you like my interpretation.
