Leo Carrillo State Beach is a beautiful place with wide sandy beaches, cliffs and rocky outcroppings that reach out into the pounding surf.  While several of us were out painting on this day we looked beyond the rocks to the kelp forest a few hundred feet off shore to see a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins slowly swimming along the rim of the kelp.  Up and down they went as they gracefully and patiently nosed through the water looking for food or, possibly, simply enjoying a beautiful day like we were!

This was the second plein air piece I completed in our Master Class with David Gallup.   My friend Laura Wambsgans and I were just having too great a time to leave so we stayed a bit after David left to work on our paintings in the beautiful SoCal afternoon.  I am trying very hard not to paint ordinary "postcard scenes".   Although there is nothing really unique about the landscape... it's beautiful and all around us... the trick is to find our own voice when chosing a scene.   It is one way to set ourselves apart from a myriad of other wonderful artists.  I continue on this journey...  it's a long but enjoyable one!!

David did a demo when we first arrived while the weather was still overcast.   During his demo he described his philosophy about finding a subject and composing or arranging the elements while creating a painting.    (See my earlier post.)  Here are a few photos from David's demo earlier in the day:

David explains "the gift" of the
painting.  (See my last post)

Almost done.

Now it's our turn.
