On our way up to Kern for a painting adventure, four of us artists stopped at a turn-out to view the river.   We couldn't help ourselves.  It was simply wildly beautiful.   Each of us found our spot, some looking down river, others up river and we painted and smiled and totally had a great time.

I crawled out onto some rocks where a tree had built up a blockade and painted the view looking toward Lake Isabella and Kernville.  This is the roaring wild side of the the Kern River where it rushes through the canyon on its way downhill toward the valley below.

I often paint with my friends, but so often I've jealously watched the facebook postings of groups of guys, many of whom I know, who join together and travel somewhere to paint.   It always looks like such fun!    Trying to get a group of women painters together isn't always easy but the four of us, Laura Wambsgans, Sharon Weaver, Diane Nelson-Gold and me all have been wishing we could go somewhere to paint together.   Recently the California Art Club hosted an outing at a ranch that seemed like lots of fun, but most of us couldn't go.  So, since my son and his wife own vacation cottages for rent (Sierra Gateway Cottages) in Kern, I suggested we plan for a trip to paint the fall colors up along the river.  We all cleared it with our families and had looked forward to it for months.

Well, the colors hadn't quite turned... they were just starting.... but the trip was all we had hoped it would be.   We packed up our EasyLs (isn't it funny?... We ALL have EasyL pochade boxes!) some food a few clothes and off we went.   We painted on the way up, all day on the second day and all day and on the way back on the third.   We arrived home exhausted and happy.   What a great time!

Thank you, painting buddies!!!   -Loved the learning, the laughter and the great memories.
