A Hike on Santa Barbara Island by Marian Fortunati

Island Color - 14x11

On the 2012 visit to the Channel Islands with David Gallup and a group of artists and adventurers, our first stop was faraway Santa Barbara Island.   I'm told that in the springtime, these hills are alive with wildflowers.  I imagine the coreopsis are spectacular. But this September, the windswept hills were ablaze with a beautiful but non-native red-orange ice plant.  The rangers said that they were trying to eradicate it.
Pity... I thought it was gorgeous.

I apologize to those of you who wanted to know a bit more about our Channel Islands adventure.   I WILL get things posted, but I've been REALLY busy with trying to get ready for my show.   (I hope that if you can, you'll come on by to see the work..)

I've also had class, and meetings, and a paint out that I didn't want to miss.   Oh... And by far not the LEAST problem... was that I caught a miserable cold on the night of the first day of this trip (probably from hiking and painting in the wind...  or maybe I had it all along...) but it sort of dampened my spirit.  I still had fun... Did as much kayaking and snorkeling and hiking and painting as I could... but..  well, you know how colds are...

Anyway.. this painting isn't plein air.  I'll post those in the next days (after I hang my show at Gale's in Pasadena on Saturday).   I painted this from a combination of several reference photos I took from my hike with painter friends on Santa Barbara Island.   What a beautiful place!
Also... I'll get my newsletter done soon.  If you haven't already signed up to receive it via email, I'd love you to do that now!
