LARGE PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

Saturday morning I taught a special Plein Air Workshop on how to create large paintings on location. This 24x24 inch painting was done as a demonstration of that.

(See, I do work in larger sizes. I just don’t usually show them on my blog.)

Time is usually limited outdoors because of rapidly changing light and atmospheric conditions. And that presents certain challenges.

One of the things I demonstrated in the workshop was how to handle those challenges while creating a gallery-ready painting from start to finish.

Equipment must be set up a bit differently too, because of the need to cover more square inches of a painting than a small piece requires. That was another element I covered in the workshop.

But the goal is the same for a large painting or a small one: to capture the emotion and drama of the scene that inspired me at the moment. And that was the real focus here.

Many followers of my blog don’t realize that I work in larger sizes. On the blog I usually only feature smaller pieces at very affordable prices so that new collectors can become familiar with my work.

But I work much larger too, as I did here.

This painting shows a view looking north from a hilltop along the Jeffrey Open Space Trail in Irvine, California.

A short distance away from this hilltop I did another painting at sunset. That painting is also on the same sized 24x24 inch panel as this one.

That painting shows a view looking a bit to the right of this scene, and features Saddleback Mountain with the rich golden colors of the setting sun washing across it. On tomorrow’s blog I’ll show that one. Stop back and have a look at that one, too.

Thanks for looking,
Tom

This is a beautiful painting. I love the brushwork and wonderful variety of greens. Wow! A 24 x 24 plein air. I can't quite fathom that.
