Sometimes I just have fun playing with paint.
I used two different photo references from a trip I took aboard a 50 foot sailboat to the British Virgin Islands (The BVI) to create the sketch for this painting. My daughter and I had soooooooo much fun on this trip!!! It was exotic, exciting and beautiful. It was one of those memories that will never fade.
I find that I enjoy working with a palette knife. I suppose the more I do it, the better I'll get! As I was creating this colorful scene, I thought it might look as exotic as the place that inspired it.

Several years ago my daughter and I spent an idyllic week on a 50 foot sailboat in the British Virgin Islands (known as the BVI). There were three sailboats in the group each with about 10 people aboard. We had an amazing time and saw some of the world's most beautiful scenery. Sunrises, sunsets, beautiful unpopulated Caribbean beaches, clear blue skies, skies filled with huge cloud formations and famous vacation resorts. We laughed, we sailed, we snorkeled (or scuba dived), we swam, hiked, ate wonderful meals and we had an altogether unforgettable time. It was an amazing adventure!
I recently realized, however, as I was looking through my photos of the trip, that I now take a different type of photo than I did before I began painting in earnest.
No matter, I decided to have a bit of fun painting this little scene. I used a combination of palette knife and brushes. So here's the question: When I'm thinking about what to paint...... when I'm playing with paint just to pass the time... is it really painting? Is playtime paint time???

BOAT, HARBOR, CLOUDS PLEIN AIR PAINTING BY TOM BROWN

Another juicy little gem done just for fun. (Check the texture and colors in the detail shot.)
This was painted at the edge of Balboa Island late in the day. I used my custom-designed pochade box and a palette knife. That’s all I needed.
Setup was instantaneous. I just popped open my pochade box and went to work. No solvents or mediums to spill, and no brushes to clean when I’m done.
Afterwards I merely wiped the palette knife on a tissue and closed the paintbox with the painting safely stored inside. I was completely packed and ready to go.
That kind of gear makes it very inviting to pause for a few moments to capture something like this in a painting. I’ll bet it makes you want to get out your OWN paints and give it a try, doesn’t it?
